New update on heart disease

NEW DELHI: The width of the blood vessels in the eyes of middle-aged men and women can tell if they are prone to coronary heart disease, said K.K. Aggarwal, president of the Heart Care Foundation of India, on Tuesday quoting a study conducted by researchers at Sydney University in Australia.

"The researchers used retinal photography technique to measure the diameter of small arteries and small veins in more than 3,600 men and women who were over 49 years. The small arteries and veins are branches of main arteries and veins and their condition reflects the general state of smaller blood vessels throughout the body. For those aged between 49 and 75 years, the study found that the risk of death due to heart disease was doubled if they had wider eye small veins," he said.
