NEW DELHI: The Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, Jagdish Mukhi, on Tuesday blamed the Sheila Dikshit Government for the poor power situation in the Capital. He charged that it was making false claims about additional power being allocated from the Central quota and also purchase of power from neighbouring States. In a statement, Mr. Mukhi said both Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and Power Minister Haroon Yusuf had claimed that additional power would be made available to Delhi shortly. However, it was not power from Gujarat or Orissa but the monsoon showers that provided relief and resulted in a drop in peak demand. Similarly, after a few days it was announced that additional power would reach Delhi in two or three days. "But again nothing happened and when the skies cleared the power shortage again became evident exposing the claims of the Delhi Government." Mr. Mukhi said the fact remained that after privatisation of the erstwhile Delhi Vidyut Board the Delhi Government had failed to increase electricity generation and on the other hand the private power distribution companies had failed miserably in distributing the available power to the consumers. "This summer has been the worst for the people of Delhi who have been forced to deal with unannounced power cuts from 4-8 hours per day," he added. Mr. Mukhi said: "it is a well-known fact that there has been a major scam in the privatisation of Delhi Vidyut Board" and urged Lieutenant-Governor B.L. Joshi to review the situation.
