Woman jumps before Metro

Staff Reporter

Operations on undergroundLine 2 disrupted for 30 minutes

NEW DELHI: Metro Rail services on the underground Line 2 were disrupted for over half an hour during the peak rush hour on Tuesday morning after a 25-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide by jumping in front of a train at Chandni Chowk station.

It was around 9-20 a.m. that the woman, identified as Paramjit Kaur of Ganesh Nagar area in West Delhi, jumped before the train coming in from Central Secretariat and headed for Delhi University. She was killed on the spot.

Metro operations on the line were completely disrupted for the next 32 minutes. There was no movement on the line as the body had to be removed. Since this line also provides a link to passengers for changing over from the Shahdara-Rithala Line 1 to the Barakhamba-Dwarka Sub City Line 3, the disruption in operations led to a massive build-up of people at Rajiv Chowk and Kashmere Gate stations.

Moreover, since it was raining heavily at the time and the movement of vehicular traffic had been badly affected on the roads, the number of commuters on the Metro system was especially high.

Stating that normal operations were restored at 9-52 a.m., a Delhi Metro Rail Corporation spokesperson said preliminary investigations suggested that it was a case of suicide. While the Delhi police have registered a case and are conducting investigations, DMRC has also ordered an inquiry.

The police investigations revealed that the woman had been "missing" from her house since 4 p.m. on Monday. She left her house stating that she would return after making a phone call. However, when she did not return till midnight, her relatives lodged a complaint with the police.

The woman had married Gurmeet Singh about six years ago and had a two-year-old daughter from the marriage. However, Gurmeet had been living in Moscow for the past five years. The police said Paramjit had also spoken to Gurmeet recently and told him that she planned to visit Amritsar. The police are now probing what made her take the extreme step.
