Panels to select non-hereditary trustees abolished
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI:
The State Government has abolished the district committees for selecting non-hereditary trustees in religious institutions.
The ordinance promulgated by the Governor on Sunday said it was found that the committees had failed to fulfil the purpose for which they were constituted. The powers exercised by these committees should be conferred on the Government: commissioner, joint commissioner and assistant commissioner, as the case may be.
To give opportunities to senior citizens and women and others, who have the necessary aptitude, dedication and competence and to strengthen and provide impetus to the administration of the religious institutions, the government reduced the term of office of non-hereditary trustees from three years to one year. It decided to appoint one Scheduled Caste/Tribe member in the Board of Trustees of every religious institution. Provision will be made in the HR and CE Act to ensure one woman member on the board.
