Man gets 10-year RI for rape

New Delhi: A city court on Monday sentenced a man to 10 years' rigorous imprisonment for raping an 18-year-old girl two years ago.

Additional Sessions Judge B.R. Kedia found accused Ramesh guilty of offences under Sections 376 (rape) and 376(2) (gang rape) of the IPC and also imposed a fine of Rs 3,000 on him.

Ramesh's accomplice, Rakesh, has been declared a `proclaimed offender'. The accused had met the girl at the Old Delhi Railway Station on April 28 two years ago and seduced her to accompany him. He had then raped her and later dropped her near a Gurdwara here. She was found in a dazed condition by another woman who reported the matter to police. The prosecution examined 25 witnesses at the trial. Interestingly, the court observed in its judgement that the Investigating Officer's work in the case had been `poor' and the conviction was based solely on the testimony of the victim.
