U.P. roadways strike to begin tonight

Govt. claims support of two associations

  • `National Security Act would be invoked against those trying to disrupt bus services'
  • `DMs and police chiefs have been directed to ensure that strikers do not trouble UPSRTC employees who report for duty'

Lucknow: Faced with a strike call by State Road Transport Corporation employees' union from midnight, Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday said it was fully prepared to deal with the situation following support by two staff associations.

``All preparations have been made to deal with the strike and it would hardly have any impact as we have the support of U.P. Roadways Karmchari Sanyukt Parishad and Roadways Mazdoor Sabha. Contract employees have also given affidavits not to support the strike,'' Transport minister Naresh Agarwal told newsmen here.

He said the National Security Act would be invoked against those trying to disrupt bus services. ``Our government is open for talks with anyone but will not tolerate hooliganism at any cost,'' the minister said. All district magistrates and police chiefs had been directed to ensure that the strikers do not trouble those UPSRTC employees who report for duty, he added.

The state government had already terminated the services of 898 contractual employees and suspended 892 others while chargesheeting 39 and lodging FIRs against 554 for taking part in the July 10 strike to press their demands, including regularisation and hike in wages, he said.

``No work no pay'' rule had been implemented on all those who had participated in the strike besides invoking Essential Services Maintenance Act banning any strike and agitation, Mr. Agarwal said. - PTI
