TAMBARAM: The laying of underground drains in Pallavaram has been anything but smooth. Residents are particularly irked by the shoddy restoration of the roads dug up to lay the underground pipelines.
Problem compounded
And to compound the problem, the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board, which is executing the project, is doing little to sort out the problems, they say. As if to prove their point, a brick-laden lorry was trapped in the loose mud on Monday morning on the New Colony Sixth Cross Street in Chromepet.
Rs. 48 crore project
Metrowater started executing the Rs. 48 crore project to lay underground drains in January this year. Work has been going at a brisk pace with five contractors carrying out the project work simultaneously.
Glaring defects
Activists and elected representatives have been pointing out some of the glaring defects, most importantly the shoddy road restoration work. Communist Part of India (Marxist) Councillor (Ward No. 40) S. Narasimhan said senior Metrowater officials had been told about the lapses during a recent inspection, but nothing had been done.
Complaint cell
Mr. Narasimhan said Metrowater, in view of the scale of the project, could have opened a complaint cum suggestion cell on the Municipality premises to allow residents to lodge any complaints.
