Security tightened at five railway stations

  • One month alert sounded at stations after intelligence warning
  • Closed circuit televisions installed at Guwahati railway station

Guwahati: Assam Governor Lieutenant General (retd.) Ajai Singh and Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Tuesday led the State in paying homage to the Mumbai blasts victims at a special prayer meeting organised at the railway station here.

Lt. Gen. Singh and Mr. Gogoi placed floral wreaths on the portraits of the blast victims and lit candles. A two-minute silence was also observed.

Security has been tightened in the Rangia, Bongaigaon, Tinsukia and Lumding railway stations following specific intelligence warning that Islamic militant outfits may target them. A one-month alert has been sounded in these stations and the Guwahati railway station.

As part of special security measures at the railway station here, 16 closed circuit television cameras have been installed covering the platforms, railway tracks, pedestrian bridges, auto rickshaw stand, entrance and exit points. A control room has been set up at the Government Railway Police station to keep a constant vigil with the help of a monitor connected to the CCTVs. Porters, vendors and railway employees have been instructed to report to the nearest police or army personnel on duty about any suspicious movement or object.

The City Police on Monday arrested a leader of the Muslim United Liberation Tigers of Assam (MULTA) from Ambari locality under Bharalumukh police station. Additional Superintendent of Police Rajen Singh said that the arrested MULTA leader Nur Islam was the camp commander of MULTA's training camp in Bangladesh and he was hiding in the city in the guise of a rickshaw puller.

The city police are also interrogating five persons arrested on suspicion of being fundamentalists. Mr. Singh said that two of them had visited Kamakhya temple and police are trying to find if they had any ulterior plan.
