HYDERABAD: Perturbed over a series of fatal accidents involving pedestrians, City Traffic Police has proposed to erect permanent barricades on two arterial roads in the city.

Initially, iron barricades will be erected on the median of the two stretches from Punjagutta to Ameerpet and Somajiguda to Raj Bhavan to restrict walkers from crossing the main road, instead of zebra crossings. The facility will be extended to other roads in a phased manner based on the response from people.

Indiscipline among pedestrians and motorists coupled with bad road conditions were the major causes of accidents.

Zebra crossings

According to the traffic police, walkers tend to cross the road in a hurry despite provision of zebra crossings at all major junctions. Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) A. K. Khan said people would be motivated to use only pedestrian crossings and they would also not dare to cross the road at any other point after barricades are erected.

Mr. Khan said 50 pelican signal lights, which can be operated by pedestrians, would also be installed at major junctions for the convenience of pedestrians. One has to just press the button located on a pole on the footpath if he or she wants to cross the road.
