Chief Minister serious about Anantapur killings, pulls up police officials

  • Focus on recent killing of three TDP activists during review of law and order situation
  • Police told to conduct counselling for families entangled in faction fights

HYDERABAD: Taking a serious note of the political murders in Anantapur district, Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy has issued orders for forming special teams to control factional violence in the Rayalaseema region as a whole.

The killing of three Telugu Desam activists recently in the district was in focus during a review of the law and order situation in the State by the Chief Minister with Home Minister K. Jana Reddy and the police top brass here on Tuesday. The Chief Minister was stated to have pulled up police officials for allowing the situation to slip out of control in Anantapur district, resulting in such murders, and wanted suitable steps to be taken by Director-General of Police Swaranjit Sen to prevent their recurrence.

Speaking to reporters later, Mr. Jana Reddy said the Chief Minister also wanted the police to conduct counselling for the families entangled in faction fights in Rayalaseema region, especially Anantapur district, and set up special courts for speedy trial of the cases, apart from liberal use of the Preventive Detention Act wherever required.

As part of the big recruitment planned for tackling various law and order problems, the meeting resolved to recruit 2,000 men for Special Protection Force and 100 each for State Intelligence Bureau and for the Counter Intelligence wing.

The meeting condemned the violent activities resorted to by Maoists in Chattisgarh. The Home Minister said investigations of the irregularities committed by various urban cooperative banks, including Krushi, had reached the final stage and the findings would be placed before people shortly.
