BMTC to launch drive against misuse of passes

Staff Reporter

Offenders will be liable to pay penalties and face criminal action

  • Weeklong special drive to be launched from today
  • Commuters urged to purchase daily passes only from the conductor on duty
  • Drive against men occupying seats reserved for women to be launched

BANGALORE: The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) will undertake a weeklong special drive from Wednesday to check misuse of daily and monthly passes. The offenders, BMTC said, would be liable to payment of penalty as well as criminal action.

The corporation said many instances of misuse of resale and exchange of the daily passes priced at Rs. 25 had come to its notice. The pass was introduced for the convenience of commuters to travel on BMTC buses at affordable price without any limit. However, the misuse appeared to have taken an organised nature and petty shops abutting bus stops had become the centre of such activities.

Instances of misuse of monthly passes by way of non-renewal of passes, super imposition and photocopying, use of single pass by more than one person having different ID cards and the like have been reported, BMTC said.

It has urged commuters to put an end to the unhealthy practices. Commuters have to purchase the daily passes only from the conductor on duty inside the bus and immediately enter their age and sign in the specified place. Monthly passes have to be purchased from authorised counters and promptly be renewed, it said.

Name and address of the pass holder should immediately be entered on the pass, the corporation said.

The drive, to be undertaken with the help of the city police, would also involve action against men occupying seats reserved for women, senior citizens and persons with disabilities, an official press release said.
