NEW DELHI: An enforcement team of North Delhi Power Limited (NDPL) along with the Delhi police has nabbed a gang of impostors who allegedly posed as employees of the company and extorted money from power consumers by threatening to take action against them for power theft and tampering of meters. The gang was caught with the help of a consumer in Rani Bagh. An NDPL spokesman said four men impersonating as NDPL officials approached a consumer at Rani Bagh in North-West Delhi recently. After a check, they told the consumer that both his meters were tampered with and thus a case of power theft was being registered against him. They also pasted fake paper seals on both meters. Two men from the gang returned after a couple of hours wanting to remove the meters. The impostors even made him talk to a fake person from the NDPL enforcement assessment cell who revealed that his theft bill could run up to Rs. 3 to 4 lakhs. It was then that the consumer decided to check with NDPL. The next day the consumer again got a call from a fake NDPL official who informed that the theft bill of his two meters was Rs. 2.5 lakhs and Rs.1.6 lakhs. A demand for Rs.1 lakh was made in order to settle the case. After getting full support from NDPL and the police, the consumer called the men to his residence. Both were allegedly caught red handed by the police while accepting Rs.10,000 in cash. A First Information Report has been registered against them at the Saraswati Vihar police station. The police claim to have recovered the extorted money, a motorbike and two cell phones from their possession.
