Five arrested in abduction case

Staff Reporter

Accused demanded Rs. 5 lakh-ransom for victim's release Accused demanded Rs. 5 lakhs as ransom

NEW DELHI: Five persons, including a woman, have been arrested by the North-East Delhi police for allegedly abducting a 35-year-old man and demanding a ransom of Rs. 5 lakhs.

The police said Niranjan Singh, a resident of Usmanpur, reported to the police this past Saturday that he was abducted by five persons and kept in a DLF flat at Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh on July 14. The accused called up his family and demanded Rs. 5 lakhs as ransom.

Following negotiations, the accused scaled down their demand to Rs. 2 lakhs. Mr. Singh's family, however, put a condition with the alleged abductors that the money would be paid only if the victim was released. The accused, apparently confident that the victim would not approach the police, allowed the victim to go and agreed to accept the ransom amount at Bhajanpura intersection.

Mr. Singh called up the Police Control Room around 1-30 a.m. on Saturday and informed them about the incident. The next day, as per plan, he reached the place where the ransom amount was to be paid. One of the accused, identified as Mandeep Kumar Sethi, was apprehended by the waiting police team when he came to collect the money.

At his instance, the other accused, Zia-ur-Rehman, Manish Kumar, Mahender Sharma and his wife, Nirupa, were arrested.

The police said Mahender and Nirupa, along with their son, Robin, had joined hands with two alleged bad characters of New Usmanpur, Vinod and Majid, to abduct Mr. Singh for ransom. Vinod and Majid had roped in their associates, Zia, Manish and Mandeep. Mahender and his wife had been promised a share in the ransom amount, the police said.

Investigations are now on to ascertain the previous involvements of the other accused and try and nab Vinod and Majid, who had abducted Mr. Singh in their Santro car.
