Focus on Indo-Russian friendship

NEW DELHI: To commemorate the 40th anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's first visit to Russia and the significant contribution to Indo-Soviet relations during her stewardship, the Russian Centre of Science and Culture and the India-Russian Friendship Society organised a seminar-cum-presentation on "Legacy of the Great Epoch" here this past week.

Speaking on the occasion, All-India Congress Committee secretary Ved Prakash said Indo-Soviet relations flourished during Ms. Gandhi's regime and the credit for a stable and unique relationship between the two countries certainly went to her.

Man held for killing wife

NEW DELHI: The husband of a 35-year-old woman has been arrested by the North-East Delhi police for allegedly killing her this past Sunday. According to the police, Mammo, wife of Salauddin, a resident of Shastri Park at Seelampur in North-East Delhi, was found dead in her house around 8 a.m. Following investigations, the police suspected the involvement of her husband. Salauddin was questioned at length following which he allegedly confessed to having killed his wife. He was subsequently arrested.

Salauddin told the police that he had suffered losses in business and wanted to sell the house. But his wife was against it. He also claimed that he had lent money to his brothers-in-law who were not returning it . This led to frequent quarrels between him and his wife. Subsequently, he decided to kill her. On Sunday morning, he strangled Mammo with her chunni.

Arrested for murder

NEW DELHI: A 23-year-old man has been arrested by the Nand Nagri police in North-East Delhi for allegedly killing his friend this past Saturday.

According to the police, the accused, Sudhir, was arrested at Shivani Dharam Kanta in Ghaziabad on Monday. The police said Sudhir had lent Rs. 10,000 to his friend Pawan, a resident of Harsh Vihar in Nand Nagri. However, Pawan was not returning the money. Sudhir then decided to kill him.

On Friday evening, Sudhir invited Pawan to a place in Ghaziabad where they consumed liquor together and then returned to Pawan's accommodation past midnight. When Pawan fell asleep, Sudhir strangled him and fled away.

Nabbed for graft

NEW DELHI: A Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) employee and a "tout" have been arrested by the Anti-Corruption Branch of the State Government for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs. 500 to re-activate a Garuda connection.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Anti-Corruption) Bhairon Singh Gurjar, the Department received a complaint from one Rajesh Sharma alleging that an MTNL employee had been demanding Rs. 500 from him to re-activate his Garuda mobile phone connection. Mr. Sharma went to the Sub-Division Garuda Service Centre at the Shakti Nagar telephone exchange on July 15 for reactivation of his connection and deposited his mobile phone. But, a phone mechanic, later identified as Hari Singh, demanded Rs. 500 for the work. The Anti-Corruption Branch sleuths laid a trap and arrested Hari Singh and Anil Madan, who allegedly operated at the telephone exchange as a "tout", while they were receiving the bribe amount on Monday.
