Thiruvananthapuram: The Newspaper in Education (NIE) programme of The Hindu , a project aimed at empowering students with in-depth knowledge of contemporary issues of relevance to them while assisting them to improve their skills in several faculties, was inaugurated at the Mannam Memorial Residential Higher Secondary School, Neramankara here on Wednesday. The school, with 3,000 students and 101 teachers, became the first in the capital to organise the NIE programme in the current academic year. Vice-president, Triumphant Institute for Management Education (TIME), Ajay Antony, who was the chief guest at the function held in the school, reminded the students that communication skills were the recipe to success. Pointing out that lack of communication skills is the biggest problem he had found among students during the interaction with them, Mr. Antony said: "You might be the best in anything. Knowledge cannot be transferred to others unless you communicate in simple language." Interview is a two-way process. But, those appearing for interviews prefer to say either "yes" or "no" to questions posed to them and it would in no way impress those in the interview board. Mr. Antony said the NIE programme would go a long way in moulding the students and for preparing them for appearing in interviews. He advised the students to get things across in simple words and to be careful in their accent. Mr. Antony gave examples such as the words being used by batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar while batting along with Virendra Shewag to tell the students about the importance of communication and power of communication to the students.
Principal of the school A.G. Vijayakumar welcomed the gathering. As many as 80 students of Class VII, VIII and IX have been enrolled for the programme. Regional General Manager of The Hindu , Thiruvananthapuram T.S. Lakshminarasimhan and president of the Parent Teacher Association of the school M.R.C. Nair spoke. Staff secretary L. Vijaya proposed the vote of thanks.
