West Bengal keen on industrial growth: Bose

Special Correspondent

Says no differences between party and Government in acquiring land

  • Left Front is determined to safeguard interests of farmers
  • Party is not in favour of hire-and-fire policy

KOLKATA: Chairman of the Left Front committee Biman Bose on Wednesday told a group of industrialists here that the West Bengal Government was keen to ensure industrial growth in the State.

Mr. Bose, who is also secretary of the State Committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), told newspersons later that there were no differences between his party and the Government in acquiring land for setting up new industries.

This was also reportedly conveyed to industrialists at a meeting held in response to an invitation to Mr. Bose from the Indian Chamber of Commerce.

The State Government's industrialisation plan, its views on work culture and trade unionism and acquisition of land for setting up of new industries figured in the discussions.

The Opposition parties have been critical of the Government's move to acquire agricultural land. Some partners of the ruling Left Front also expressed misgivings on the matter earlier.

However, these were allayed in separate meetings with Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee.

Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee issued a threat in Singur in Hooghly district on Tuesday that "blood would flow" if agricultural land was taken away from farmers.

She was speaking close to the site of the proposed small car manufacturing factory to be set up by Tata Motors.

The Left Front is determined to safeguard the interests of farmers and ensure that food security is not threatened by its plans for land acquisition.
