Staff Reporter

Indian companies getting enough work orders

  • Demand for production of animation films in India is on the rise
  • Film and advertisement sectors provide ample opportunities

KOCHI: Animation industry is poised for a boom in India. The international business in the field is worth $60 billion, according to K. Kumar, Managing Director of Image Infotainment Limited, a Chennai-based company engaged in 3D animation, visual effects, game design and game development.

Indian companies established in the animation field are getting enough work orders from various countries like France and Spain. The demand for production of animation films in India is on the rise as the cost of production is only one-fourth or one-fifth of the cost being incurred abroad.

The animation industry is estimated at $900 million by 2009.

This type of growth needs a huge human resource and the company is planning to cater to the need. It is launching three-year undergraduate course in 3D animation, visual effects, game design and game development. It will launch centres in Dubai and London. The Dubai centre would be a joint venture, he said.

The film and advertisement sectors provide ample opportunities and there is a scarcity of qualified hands, according to him. The gaming industry is of the size of $10 billion, he said. A variety of games introduced in the mobile phones indicate the significance of the gaming sector. An international IT giant has opened an office in India for the carrying out the gaming works. A lot of such projects will come up in various parts of the country, according to him. International companies like Walt Disney has started 3D conversion projects in India.

Image has increased its presence in Kerala by opening more centres. It has centres in Thrissur, Kochi, Kottayam and Thiruvananthapuram. New centres will be opened at places like Kozhikode, Kannur and Kollam.
