BANGALORE: Telecom companies talk about last-mile connectivity. But, for many, trying to lose a few kilos has become a major problem. Health club trainers and nutritionists report they now have to deal with weight loss issues from young working women. Working women in the 25 to 35 age group find it difficult to maintain their weight because of long and irregular working hours and poor eating habits. People in call centre/BPO sector, IT firms and other businesses are forced to cut down on their lunch hour because of work pressure. Frequent business travel and the kind of food taken during business meetings worsens the problem. And exercise is ruled out owing to fatigue and lack of sleep. Nutritionists suggest a home cooked meal with plenty of vegetables and fruits for dessert as the best for those pressed for time. However, most working women make do with pizzas and sandwiches. Health club trainers point out that women tend to accumulate fat below the waist and men above the lower waist. While too much fat around the hips may not lead to heart ailments it can result in deposits of cellulite which is more difficult to get rid of as one grows older. Exercise and cutting down drastically on fatty foods, including sweets and chocolates, could solve the problem. Exercises targeting the lower abdomen, hips and thighs and those that tone up the rest of the body are usually suggested. Aerobics on the other hand speeds up the metabolism and helps prevent accumulation of fat.
