News Analysis
* In the ANI report "No golf carts for Manmohan" (July 18, 2006), the sentence was "Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, however, shied away from this sporting excursion across a geographical expanse bordering the Caspian Sea." A reader wonders how the G8 leaders could be meeting by the Caspian Sea. St. Petersburg is by the Baltic Sea. * A reader says that in "Mumbai: what next?" (Editorial, July 17, 2006), it had been stated that potassium permanganate is one of the chemicals used in terror strikes. The reader felt it was incorrect and that it should have been potassium nitrate. Praveen Swami clarifies: "Potassium permanganate is among several commercially-available chemicals which may be used to fabricate a high-explosive device, along with ammonium nitrate and potassium nitrate. A 1998 report from the United States National Research Council lists 28 chemicals likely to be used in making a bomb. Chemicals cited include picric acid, potassium nitrate, sodium nitrite, potassium permanganate, glycerine, and concentrated hydrochloric or nitric acid." * Value-added tax (VAT) has been introduced all over the country except in Pondicherry, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh. In the report "Minister hints at implementing value-added tax regime in State" (Tamil Nadu, July 17, 2006, page 1), Uttar Pradesh had been left out. In the same report, a reader wondered whether the figure quoted for the drop in annual tax revenue of Maharashtra, after implementing VAT was correct. Tamil Nadu Commercial Taxes Minister S.N.M. Ubayathullah had said it had dropped to Rs. 15,000 crore from Rs. 19,000 crore. The reader felt it was probably only "sales tax revenue" and not "tax revenue". The reference was to sales tax revenue for the fiscal 2005-06 which was (approximately) Rs. 20,071 crore. * An "explosive dealer" is one who is likely to explode, says a reader. In "Coimbatore serial blasts: `1,000 kg gelatine procured from Mysore'" (Tamil Nadu, July 19, 2006), the text had seven instances of the wrong use of "explosive" as either "explosive agent" or "explosive dealer". "Explosive" in such usage becomes an adjective. It should have been "explosives dealer" and "explosives agent". * In the column "Past & Present The good man and the greater man" (The Hindu-Magazine, July 16, 2006, page 3) the text mentions Rahul Dravid's "masterful 100 at Old Trafford". As a reader points out, India did not play a Test match at Old Trafford on the 2002 tour of England. Dravid's Test hundreds on that campaign were made at Trent Bridge, Headingley and the Oval.
