NEW DELHI: Former National junior champion G. N. Gopal pulled off a stunning victory over fifth seeded Azerbaijan's Grandmaster Azer Mirzoev on another fruitful day for the Indians in the Balaguer International Open chess tournament at Balaguer on Tuesday. If Gopal dominated Mirzoev, rated 2523, in the French Tarrasch game by pinning down the GM's king in the centre, Woman Grandmaster Eesha Karavade proved equal to eighth seeded Ukrainian GM Sergei Krivoshey (2500). Sahaj Grover, the first-round hero after drawing with GM Nidjat Mamedov, upstaged Spain's Rafael Colas Longares, rated 237 points above at 2261. However, 11th seeded S. Kidambi was held by much lower-rated WGM Irina Lymar (2293). The results (involving Indians): Second round: Dinesh Sharma (1) lost to Vladimir Baklan (Ukr, 2); G. N. Gopal (2) bt Azer Mirzoev (Aze, 1); Sergei Krivoshey (Ukr, 1.5) drew with Eesha Karavade (1.5); Irina Lymar (Ukr, 1.5) drew with S. Kidambi (1.5); Josep Rodriquez Melgar (Esp, 1) lost to S. Konguvel (2) bt Joan Trepat Herranz (Esp, 1); Roquelina Fandino (Cub, 1) lost to Vishal Sareen (2); Jaime Parramon Guillaumet (Esp, 1) lost to Lanka Ravi (2); Rafael Colas ongares (Esp, 0) lost to Sahaj Grover (1.5); Abhyudaya Rajpurohit (1) bt Ramon Sanso Condina (Cat, 0).
