CHENNAI: Underground sewerage schemes in Tiruchi, Tiruneveli, Thanjavur, Karur-Inam Karur and Mayiladuthurai should be commissioned this year, Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin told officials on Wednesday. Estimated to cost Rs. 360 crore, the schemes are being implemented by the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board. Work on underground sewer network in 14 district headquarters, including Kancheepuram, Vellore, Cuddalore, Namakkal, Coimbatore, Salem, Pudukottai, Ramanathapuram, Tuticorin and Dindigul, would be taken up shortly at a cost of Rs. 636.25 crore. Estimates had been prepared for 10 other district headquarters. This would cost Rs. 286.41 crore. Work would begin this year after getting approval, said an official release. For 35 of the remaining municipalities, the Board is carrying out a survey for the sewerage network. Mr. Stalin advised the Board officials to complete the execution of combined water supply schemes in 38 towns on time. Local Administration and Water Supply Secretary K. Deenabandu, Managing Director of TWAD Board Swaran Singh, and Engineering Director of the Board P.K. Natesan attended the meeting.
