Charge sheet filed against Central Excise official

For possessing wealth to the tune of Rs. 45.62 lakh

CHENNAI: The Central Bureau of Investigation's Anti-Corruption Branch, Chennai, has charge-sheeted a Joint Commissioner of Central Excise for allegedly possessing wealth to the tune of Rs. 45.62 lakh, which was "disproportionate to known sources of his income."

Besides V. Jayaraman, who was working as Joint Commissioner (Technical), Central Excise, Tiruchi, his wife, Waheeda Jayaraman, and his father, P. Velu, have been cited as accused in the charge sheet, filed for offences under sections 13 (2) and 13 (1) (e) of the Prevention of Corruption Act and 109 (punishment of abetment) of the Indian Penal Code.

The prosecution case was that Mr. Jayaraman, son of a retired police constable, joined the Central Excise as a Lower Division Clerk in August 1971. He was promoted as Joint Commissioner in January 2004. His wife worked as a teacher at Kovaipudur, Coimbatore. The check period is for 15 years from 1989.

Two persons had been cited as approvers.

A Special Court for CBI cases in Madurai had taken cognisance of the charge sheet, sources said.
