NEW DELHI: The general secretary of the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), Vaiko, has urged the Centre not to provide any military assistance to Sri Lanka, including sale of arms. In a memorandum submitted to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh here on Wednesday, Mr. Vaiko said, "I am shocked to know that India has supplied radars to the Sri Lankan Air Force. With agony I would point out that India would be found fault with for enabling the Sri Lankan Air Force to strafe and bomb the Tamil areas, killing innocent Tamils." The memorandum explained the grave situation in Sri Lanka and said that it was causing enormous suffering to the Tamils. It said that successive Sri Lankan governments had denied basic human rights to the Tamils and had never honoured any of the assurances of devolution of power to the Tamils in the north and east. Mr. Vaiko said: "A large number of Tamils are coming to the shores of Tamil Nadu as refugees. I request you to take all effective steps to see that the refugees reach our shores safely and provide all succour and solace to them." He also requested Dr. Singh to give an opportunity to the Tamil MPs elected by the Tamil population to meet him so that they could explain the real situation.
Mr. Vaiko also met National Security Adviser M.K. Narayananand apprised him of the Sri Lankan situation.
