Kozhikode: The post-mortem examination report of an accused, who died in police custody on Monday, said that the cause of his death was "atherosclerosis of the coronary artery." Senior police officials said that a team of doctors at the Department of Forensic Medicine, Kozhikode Medical College Hospital, led by Sherly Vasu conducted the post-mortem examination on the body on Abdul Razak, 55, on Tuesday. The Panniyankara police had arrested him on Monday on charges of stealing a mobile phone and attempting to snatch a gold chain from the house of Ashokan. The police said that Razak swooned during interrogation at the Panniyankara police station. He was rushed to the Government General Hospital in Kozhikode. Though the doctors administered an adrenalin injection, they declared he was brought dead. Doctors said atherosclerosis, hardening and narrowing of the arteries, could affect the arteries of the brain, heart and kidneys. Kannur Range Deputy Inspector General of Police V. Shantaram suspended Sub-Inspector M.D. Sunil in connection with the case. Officials said that Abdul Razak, hailing from Perumanna, was convicted in at least five cases registered at various police stations. He was a history-sheeter at Nallalam and Chemmangad police stations, a senior officer said. Deputy Collector S. Unnikrishna Pillai, who is officiating charge as the Revenue Divisional Officer, will submit a report based on the incident to the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) soon.
Our Staff Reporter writes from Thrissur:
The SHRC on Tuesday ordered to issue a notice demanding explanation from the Home Secretary and the Director General of Police regarding the death of Abdul Razak.
On the basis of a complaint filed by P.D. Joseph during a sitting of the Commission here, Justice A. Lakshmikutty, member, said summons should be issued to M.D. Sunil, Sub-Inspector, in connection with the death.
