BHOPAL: Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan on Wednesday announced in the State Assembly that his Government has decided to treat "patwari halka" as the unit for crop insurance in Madhya Pradesh from the 2006 kharif season onward. So far, tehsil was the unit for calculating crop damage due to adverse weather conditions. Making a statement, he said the idea behind the change was to ensure adequate compensation to farmers. For several years now the State Government had been raising this issue with the Centre. Members of Parliament from Madhya Pradesh had also raised this matter and many different forums had lobbied support at the Government of India level. The resolve to declare patwari halka as the new unit had also figured prominently in the BJP election manifesto, he told the House. Mr. Chauhan said the Central Government's sanction for declaring patwari halka as the new unit was received on June 15 this year. Under the new dispensation, 11,524 patwari halkas in the State would be treated as units for extending the crop insurance benefit to farmers.
