Sensex closes at five-week low

FIIs continue to pull out from the market

MUMBAI: The Bombay Stock Exchange sensitive index continued its downward slide for the fifth session in a row on Wednesday, with the benchmark Sensex falling below the 10000-mark before closing at a five-week low of 10007.34 amid sustained FII withdrawals.

The market virtually discounted positive factors such as announcements of impressive earnings by a few corporates and a firm trend in Asian markets with easing of oil prices during the day as foreign institutional investors (FIIs) continued to pull out from equity.

The BSE 30-share sensitive index (Sensex) later reeled under pressure, diving to the day's low of 9972.73 before closing at 10007.34 against Tuesday's close of 10226.78, a net fall of 219.44 points or 2.15 per cent. In five successive trading sessions, the Sensex has lost 922.75 points or 8.44 per cent. — PTI
