Natesan criticises doctors' stance

Staff Reporter

KOLLAM: The SNDP Yogam will observe August 7 as `reservation protection day.'

In a statement here on Wednesday, Yogam general secretary Vellappally Natesan said the Union Government's move to declare 27 per cent reservation for backward communities in higher education institutions was being torpedoed by a handful of doctors with the backing of the Indian Medical Association.

Following Supreme Court intervention, the Centre appointed a high level committee to handle the issue. Mr. Natesan alleged that the committee was now trying to appease the upper caste sections. The mainstream political parties were maintaining a puzzling silence over the reservation issue, he alleged.

He said that while the Travancore Devaswom Board had endorsed reservation to backward and scheduled communities, the other devaswom boards were yet to follow suit. He wanted the boards to extend the same consideration to the backward and scheduled communities at the earliest.

On August 7, demonstrations and public meetings will be organised by all the SNDP Unions.
