Sathyan cremated with State honours

KANNUR: The body of V.P. Sathyan, former Indian football captain, was cremated with full State honours at his native place at Mekunnu here on Wednesday.

Mekunnu village mourned the death of Sathyan who had made big contributions to the game in the country.

There was a huge turnout to pay homage to the deceased when the body was brought to Mekuunu by road in the afternoon.

The body was kept for half-an-hour at the Mekunnu Public Health Centre for public viewing before it was taken to his family residence nearby. People from all walks of life attended the funeral.

Additional District Magistrate A.C. Mathew, Revenue Divisional Officer A.K. Gangadharan and Tahsildar P.P. Ramachandran laid wreaths on the body on behalf of the State Government, the Chief Minister and the District Collector respectively. Among those who paid homage to the departed soccer player included MLAs Ramachandran Kadannappally and M. Prakashan, former athlete Shiny Wilson, former football player I.M. Vijayan and Superintendent of Police Mathew Polycarp.
