NEW DELHI: Union Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar has stressed the need for private sector contribution in the fields of television rights, sponsorships, ticketing, licensing, concessions and accommodations for making the upcoming Commonwealth Games-2010 in Delhi financially viable. Speaking at a conference on "Preparing for CWG-2010: Opportunities and Role for Business'' organised by PHDCCI on Tuesday, Mr. Aiyar said that during the Manchester CWG-2002 the total expenditure was about Rs. 1,100 crores as per the current rate of exchange out of which 43 per cent was recovered from commercial sources, particularly from sponsorships and ticketing. With the CWG-2010 in Delhi expected to cost India Rs. 7,000 crores for infrastructural development, training and conduct of the event, the Minister said the Government is looking forward to private sector contribution of Rs. 3,000 to Rs. 4,000 crores. Mr. Aiyar said the value in kind (VIK) was a key contributor to Manchester CWG and urged PHDCCI to help determine the VIK contributors for CWG-2010. He said Principal Secretary Sports Madhukar Gupta would head the Task Force set up by PHDCCI for this purpose and the Government had taken the initiative to form a Panchayat Yuva Khel Abhiyan in which Rs 1,000 crores would be spent each year. He also said that CWG-2010 would need at least 20,000 volunteers to make the mega-event successful. Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said the major sporting event has provided an opportunity to upgrade the city. The infrastructure development involving construction of flyovers, walkovers, hotel rooms and signage would be taken up with public and private partnership. Stating that problems pertaining to transport, water and electricity is being looked into by the Delhi Government, she said for improving the transport, the high capacity bus system has been introduced and the monorail is being considered. Besides, Metro and bus services will also be expanded to cater to the needs of Delhi in 2010. Moreover, in the stadiums, she said, large screen television sets would be placed so that people could see the games from outside the arena also.
