VISAKHAPATNAM: The CPI and the CPI (M) organised a joint demonstration in front of the Collectorate here on Wednesday as part of the nation-wide agitation against rise in prices of commodities.

Prices of all commodities skyrocketed due to many acts of the government, making life miserable for the middle and poor sections of society, said CPI(M) district secretary Ch. Narasinga Rao.

Government warned

Hike in prices of commodities led to the collapse of governments in the past and the Congress-led UPA Government would face the same fate if it failed to take immediate steps, he warned.

Mr. Narasinga Rao and district council secretary of the CPI J.V. Satyanarayana Murthy criticised the Centre for not accepting the alternatives suggested by the Left parties to control prices.

To control the price rise, the CPI(M) and the CPI demanded that the Government directly supply essential commodities through fair price shops, strengthen the civil supply system, remove private traders and restore to the FCI the duty of rice procurement and put an end to the free market system. Another immediate task of the Government was to conduct raids on hoarders and black marketeers, the Left parties said. CPI(M) city secretary K. Lokanadham presided. G. Vamana Murthy and Venkateswarlu of the CPI, and M. Rama, B. Prabhavathi, R. Bhagyalakshmi and other leaders of the CPI(M) participated.

Later, the two parties submitted a joint memorandum to the Collector seeking steps to reduce prices of commodities.
