MADURAI: The Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT) has identified Madurai for establishing the `Disaster Recovery Centre.' The reasons: the city is geographically strong; it has untapped potential for Information Technology companies to grow; and the stage is set for the IT Park and the TIDEL Park to come up in a couple of years. According to ELCOT Managing Director C. Umashankar, the `Disaster Recovery Centre', evolved under the National e-Governance Action Plan, will be a back-up mechanism to the `State Data Centre' coming up in Chennai that will contain all information pertaining to the Government and its functions. A Wide Area Network (WAN) was in the making, and Madurai will have high-power (8 mega bytes) online connectivity to Chennai and other districts, facilitating voice, video and data communication. 'Connect-2006' Mr. Umashankar said the Tata Consultancy Services would manage the `Disaster Recovery Centre' on a Build, Operate and Transfer basis. The ELCOT would organise `Connect-2006' in the United Kingdom, the United States and China in September to showcase Madurai as an ideal destination. "The ELCOT will provide expertise, leadership and funds for these projects."
