School for dropouts inaugurated

A FACILITY: The new library of St. John's High School, Cleveland Town.

BANGALORE: A library block and a school for dropouts from poor families were inaugurated at St. John's High School, Cleveland Town, on Tuesday. The project was launched in 2004, which marked the 150th anniversary of the school.

S. Vasanthakumar, Bishop, Karnataka Central Diocese, dedicated the new block and inaugurated the National Institute of Open Schooling.

He stressed the need for providing good infrastructure in schools for the overall development of children. "The infrastructure provided must be properly utilised, only then is the purpose fulfilled. Otherwise, the effort of the management goes waste," he said.

One needs to struggle to realise his or her dreams, he said, adding that the reading habit among children was on the wane and called upon students to cultivate it.

Principal Rani Rajkumar welcomed the gathering.

Investiture ceremony

The Oxford Senior Secondary School, J.P. Nagar, organised its investiture ceremony on Wednesday. Twenty-two new office-bearers of the students' council took oath. The elections were held recently and the students exercised their franchise to elect their leaders. Principal Mariamma C. George administered the oath to the newly elected leaders. She said that a leader needs to possess seven qualities and told the leaders to know their strengths and weaknesses. "Plan your work and execute the plan properly. You have the responsibility of motivating and encouraging other students," Ms. Mariamma said. School captain S.P. Prashanth pledged to take the school to greater heights with the cooperation of other office-bearers. Pragyanshree Jagati was elected girl captain, while Kiran S.V. was the sports captain. Veena Shashidhar welcomed the gathering and Shamala Murthy proposed a vote of thanks.

Interact club

The new office-bearers of the Interact Club of Sindhi High School, Kumara Krupa Road, were installed recently. Anjana S. of Class VIII was elected president of the club. Past district governor of the club S.R. Yogananda installed the new office-bearers at a function held on the school premises.

The "interactors" took up many projects in June. They collected old uniforms, shoes and activity books, and distributed them among children of Guddalahalli Primary School. They distributed over 5,000 paper bags to petty shops to promote ban on plastics. They also took the children of Vishwaneedum Trust Orphanage on a day's outing to Cubbon Park and distributed goodies to them.

Oath administered

St. Ann's High School, Rajajinagar, organised its investiture ceremony for 2006-07 recently. The theme was "Immortal minds are for all eternity."

Headmistress Chandralekha administered the oath to the newly elected leaders. Chairman T. Balakrishna and principal of Venkat International Public School Sulochana Balakrishna were present. They exhorted the students to face life without compromising on values and accept both blessings and buffets in their lives with equanimity.
