MANGALORE: As a part of the Urban Earthquake Vulnerability Reduction Project- a sub committee of the Government of India-United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) disaster risk management programme, Dakshina Kannada has an expert committee which will monitor the systematic development and construction activities in Mangalore and the region.

Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada M. Maheshwara Rao in a press release here on Tuesday said the committee had produced a report, after studying the Government of India expert committee report, National Building Code 2005, Town and Country Planning Act, Karnataka Municipal Corporation Act, suggesting measures to revise the existing building byelaws of the Mangalore City Corporation and the Mangalore Urban Development Authority. Mangalore is one of the 38 cities in the country where, under the joint initiative between the Government of India and UNDP, the Urban Earthquake Vulnerability Reduction Project is being implemented.
Awareness
Several workshops, seminars and training programmes have been conducted to increase the awareness among the general public about the need for systematic development of the city. The committee comprises Katta Venkataramana, professor of civil engineering, NIT-K, Surathkal, (chairperson); Town Planning Officer, Mangalore City Corporation (secretary); Additional Superintendent of Police, Dakshina Kannada, Mangalore; Joint Commissioner, Mangalore City Corporation Commissioner; Mangalore Urban Development Authority; Executive Engineer, Mangalore City Corporation, Town Planning Member, Mangalore Urban Development Authority, Executive Engineer, Public Works Department, Mangalore; divisional fire officer, Dakshina Kannada, Mangalore; district health officer, Dakshina Kannada, Mangalore; district geologist, Dakshina Kannada, Mangalore; president, Builders' Association of India; president, Kanara Builders' Association; president, Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry; Premanand Shenoy, Roy & Shenoy Structural Engineers, Mangalore; Gururaj Budhya, Urban Research Centre, Mangalore.
