THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) leader P.K. Kunhalikutty said here on Wednesday that claims on merit in higher education and employment were not always genuine. Children from the affluent sections undergo intensive coaching and fare better in competitive tests than those from the socially and economically backward sections. Such performance cannot be rated meritorious, he said. Addressing a convention on `Reservation for social justice,' organised by the United Forum for Reservation, Mr. Kunhalikutty said the Government had social responsibility to provide equal opportunities to the latter. Kerala had shown the way in ensuring the rights of the Backward Classes. Implementation of the Narendran Commission report was an example, he said. The Backward Classes were aware of their rights. Hence, organisations like the forum should take the lead in creating an awareness among the BCs in other States, he said. Inaugurating the convention, Syed Shahbuddin lauded the decision of Union Minister Arjun Singh to reserve 27 per cent seats in higher education.
