Outreach programme for development needs

Special Correspondent

Schemes to be formulated for Thiruvananthapuram East

Thiruvananthapuram: A brainstorming session convened by Thiruvananthapuram East MLA V. Sivankutty here on Monday decided to take up a public outreach programme to identify the development needs of the constituency and ensure effective utilisation of the funds allotted under various assistance schemes. The MLA and councillors will visit the constituency to collect feedback from residents' associations, mass organisations and the public on the priority projects to be taken up. A separate meeting of Government school authorities and PTAs would be convened to finalise the noon meal scheme.

Councillors who participated in the session stressed the need to construct new buildings for the Thampanoor and Karamana police stations and to remove the avenue trees that posed danger to motorists and pedestrians. They demanded steps to avoid delay in issuing certificates from village offices.

The meeting decided to open the new blocks at Thycaud Government Hospital and Iranimuttam Hospital. It also resolved to take up the construction of a new block at the Ayurveda Women's Hospital, Poojappura.

Councillors pointed out that most of the streetlights in the city were not functioning although the City Corporaton had handed over the equipment to the KSEB. They urged the KSEB authorities to remove electric posts that posed danger to the public.

Most of the participants highlighted the plight of the sewerage system. They wanted immediate measures to protect the banks of the Karamana River and to restore the cancelled bus services to various parts of the district. Another major issue that came up for discussion was the need to take up a flood control project for the Thampanoor and East Fort areas.

Participants also proposed an augmentation project for the Thrikkannapuram water supply scheme that would enable it to service the drinking water needs of 15 wards. Issue of title deeds to the residents of Karimadham and Poundukulam colonies, regulation of sand-mining from the Karamana River and water supply to the Government Quarters, Arannur were also raised.

The meeting appealed to the Traffic Police to relocate the signal lights marring the statue of Vayalar Rama Varma on the traffic island at Keltron Junction, Vellayambalam. District Collector N. Ayyappan, Tahsildar Mohanan Pillai, officials of KSRTC, Water Authority, Traffic Police, PWD, KSEB, Social Forestry, Education, Health and Irrigation departments were present. The meeting also discussed means to improve the utilisation of MLA funds.
