NEW DELHI: After coming under flak for the massive waterlogging in the city in the past two days due to heavy rain, the Standing Committee of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Wednesday passed a proposal demanding that the Delhi Jal Board be handed over to it so that the civic body could take care of clogged sewer lines which was one of the main reasons for flooding of roads. Passing the resolution unanimously, Councillors said apart from choked drains of the PWD and Flood and Irrigation Department, blocked sewer lines have aggravated the problem this rainy season. Despite the civic body cleaning its drains, the laxity on the part of other civic agencies had resulted in massive waterlogging across the city, they claimed. "Till 1998, MCD was in charge of water supply and managed the sewer network, but after that DJB was formed this work was handed over to it. However, since the water utility's formation, the problem of water-logging has increased in the Capital as sewer lines are seldom cleaned and work on laying a new network has not been taken up in a big way keeping in mind the tremendous growth in the population," said Leader of House Jitender Kochar. Similarly, Leader of the Opposition in the Standing Committee Vijender Gupta also charged the DJB with failing to clean sewer lines, besides not upgrading its existing network.
