NEW DELHI: Heavy showers that lashed East Delhi, Central Delhi and New Delhi areas on Wednesday afternoon once again left several important roads, key crossings and railway under-bridges flooded, causing immense inconvenience to motorists and pedestrians. The Capital recorded around 10 mm of rainfall during the day. However, unlike on Tuesday there were no major traffic jams except on Mathura Road, the busy ITO Crossing and Nizamuddin bridge. Waterlogging was also reported on various stretches of Ring Road, Bhairon Marg, Vikas Marg and Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg that slowed down traffic considerably. Water also collected at underpasses and near flyovers. Similarly, railway under-bridges on Bhairon Marg and Tilak Bridge were inundated, leading to breakdown of vehicles. The sudden downpour also resulted in malfunctioning of traffic signals, particularly on Mathura Road, Ring Road, Adchini and Bhogal, forcing traffic police personnel to manually manage flow of traffic. The control room at the Municipal Corporation of Delhi headquarters in Town Hall received more than two-dozen complaints of water-logging from five zones -- Shahdara-South (12 complaints), Central and Civil Lines (4 each), South (2) and Rohini (1). Meanwhile, MCD Additional Commissioner K.D. Akolia said all the major points where massive waterlogging had been reported do not come under the civic body and it was due to the failure of other civic agencies. "At busy ITO crossing, a drain and a culvert both coming under the Public Works Department are lying chocked leading to massive water-logging in the area. We have already installed water pumps to siphon off rain water from our low-lying areas," he claimed. Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department here has forecast more rain over the next couple of days.
