Brahmapuram: clearance likely next month

Staff Reporter

Plan to sign agreement for work on plant by September

KOCHI: The final clearance for the purchase of land for the proposed solid waste treatment plant of the Kochi Corporation at Brahmapuram is expected to be received next month.

The State-level Empowered Committee appointed by the Government will consider the land purchase in its meeting scheduled for August 4.

The civic body has obtained all the mandatory clearances and cleared all the hurdles before it, including the settling of the claims of the landowners, to set up the plant. "The funds are ready and we are waiting for the clearance of the Empowered Committee to commence the work," Mayor Mercy Williams said.

She said the Andhra Pradesh Technology Development Corporation, which won the contract for setting up the plant, was seeking permission to begin work. However, it cannot be started without the clearance of the committee. Minister for Local Self-Government Paloli Mohammed Kutty will sign the decision of the Empowered Committee.

This order will be considered as the approval of the State Government, she said.

The corporation plans to sign the agreement to execute work on the plant once the approval of the committee is received.

The approval of the Empowered Committee is required as the civic body had enhanced the land price by around 30 per cent following the reluctance of the landowners to part with their holdings.

If the procedural formalities for setting up the plant are completed as anticipated by the corporation, the civic body hopes to sign the agreement by September.

The corporation has prepared a project report for solid waste management in the city with a projected estimate of Rs.170 crores.

The project proposal envisages setting up of three treatment plants in three zones of the city. The proposals were formulated after a series of discussions with urban planners, citizens' groups and stakeholders for seeking assistance from the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.
