This Day That Age
President Tito of Yugoslavia, President Nasser of Egypt and Prime Minister Nehru, in a joint statement issued at the end of their two-day talks in the Brioni island on July 20, reaffirmed their faith in the principles laid down at the Bandung conference last year for lessening international tension and said peace could be attained only by aiming at collective security on a world basis and not by division of the world into powerful blocs. They pleaded for suspension of test explosions of weapons and prohibition of the use of fissionable material for war purposes. They said, "Conflicts and tension in the world have led to fears and apprehension in the present time and for the future. As long as these fears and apprehensions dominate the world, no firm basis for peace can be established. At the same time, it is difficult to remove quickly these fears and apprehensions, and progressive steps would have to be taken for their removal." They called for international cooperation in the peaceful uses of atomic energy.
