dated July 21, 1956: New rain-making theory

A French meteorologist, Prof. Dessens, will soon test a new rain-making theory in the Belgian Congo. So far, scientists have concentrated on precipitating rain from naturally formed clouds; one of the most successful of these involves spraying the clouds with silver iodide either from an aircraft or by rockets fired from the ground. Prof. Dessens will try to create the clouds to produce rain. He will work on the theory that a hot zone surrounded by a more temperate region will cause upward currents of hot air which, on reaching a certain height, will form clouds.
