Thiruvananthapuram: Illumination along the Vellayambalam-East Fort stretch will be the major attraction of Kerala Tourism's `Onaghosham,' to be held in the capital city from September 3 to 9. A decision to organise illumination in a grand way was taken at a meeting chaired by Minister for Tourism Kodiyeri Balakrishnan here on Thursday. The Minister said Government and private buildings along the stretch would be illuminated. The Government has also instituted an award for the best illumination. Kanakakkunnu palace will be the hub of celebrations as in the previous years. In addition to the cultural programmes to be organised on the palace premises, the sprawling premises will also be the venue of a food festival and trade fair. Cultural programmes will also be held at the Poojappura Maidan, VJT Hall and other permanent venues in the city. The Government is also thinking of making the Chandrashekaran Nair stadium a venue for the celebrations. The weeklong celebrations will be known as Onaghosham instead of Onam week celebrations. It was also decided to organise Onaghosham at the local level. A committee headed by the legislators will oversee the celebrations at the local level. The meeting also decided to accept sponsorships for the cultural programmes from this year. It decided to deploy adequate police personnel at the venues to provide security.
