NEGLECTED: A view of the Chandrambigai Lake in Hosur. - Photo: N. Bashkaran
Hosur: The district administration has embarked on setting up eco-tourism in the Chandrambigai (Goddess Moon) Lake in Hosur on the NH-7, which lies in a total state of neglect. A proposal titled `Project Chandrambigai' had been prepared at an outlay of Rs. 3.5 crore and sent to the Government for approval. Plans were also afoot to promote Thally also known as Little England as a high-end tourist destination in the State, Collector Santhosh Babu told The Hindu . The lake spread out in an expanse of 58 hectares was situated in the heart of the town. Though the lake was a major water source for the town it had now turned out into a collection point for garbage and drainage from SIPCOT and other housing colonies located near it. Along with this rampant growth of wild weeds and water hyacinth had depleted the water level in the lake. Based on its scenic location, steps had been initiated to provide a new lease of life to the lake, said Sub-Collector Anand Kumar.
Desiltation
To begin with, wild weeds and water hyacinth, which had spread on the water body, would be removed with chemical agents shortly. The bunds of the lake, spread over 3 km, would be strengthened and desiltation works would be taken up to improve the groundwater level. The lake has a capacity to hold water throughout the year. As part of the beautification plan, a walking strip would be created around the lake to a distance of 3.5 km at an estimate of Rs.137.34 lakh. More than 35 varieties of medicinal, ayurvedic and herbal plants including Ashoka, Champak, Dhavanam, Geranium, Jasmine, Citronella Grass, Karpooravalli, Thulasi, Tuberose and Patchouli would be planted all along the walking strip to provide an aromatic experience.
Maintenance
An amphitheatre with modern concept of meditation also formed part of the project. On the lines of Siruthuli and Noyalukku Nooru maintenance of the lake would be given to Olirum Hosur, which included representatives from prominent industries in Hosur, said Mr. Anand Kumar. The plants would be interconnected with loops and signboards would be placed to provide information on the aromatic and medicinal value of plants. The aroma released from the plants would not only purify the air but also cure respiratory problems.
Entertainment
A swimming pool would be constructed on the western side of the lake towards Bangalore and a children's park on the eastern side towards Hosur said the Director of Growmore Biotech, Dr. Bharathi. Dancing musical fountains with bamboo backdrop and a semi-circular open gallery would be constructed abetting the NH 7 to attract tourists from Bangalore. Chinese sauna bath, boating jetties, water skiing and adventurous sports had also been proposed for recreational purposes. With Hosur devoid of any entertainment the project on implementation was all poised to click, he said.
