Tatas for 100 p.c. verification of subscriber base

MUMBAI: Corporate leader Tatas on Thursday urged the telecom industry to give a commitment to the Government that it would complete 100 per cent address verification of the subscriber base particularly in the wake of the bomb blasts in the city.

"Industry has no choice except to commit to the Government that it will do everything necessary to complete 100 per cent address verification for the subscriber base, pre-paid and postpaid," Tata Teleservices said in a letter to various industry bodies and other telecom players.

Tatas' views are at variance with many of the telecom players who have expressed their inability to complete 100 per cent address verification saying it was not practical and would involve substantial cost.

Earlier, Tata Group Chairman Ratan Tata had asked telecom operators to come out with a feasible solution to iron out differences on subscriber identification.

The letter emphasised on the need for early action by the industry in view of the "recent events, including the unfortunate bomb blast in Mumbai, and the position outlined by DoT in its notices of July 14 to all operators in Haryana, Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai and Andhra Pradesh." — PTI
