India must seek sanctions against Israel: Karat

Special Correspondent

Says UPA is going soft on Israeli aggression

  • Seeks debate on Indo-US nuclear deal
  • Regrets UPA leadership's silence on key issues

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary Prakash Karat has asked the Manmohan Singh Government to work for imposition of international sanctions against Israel for its aggression on Lebanonendangering the lives and livelihood of thousands, including around 12,000 Indians.

Participating in a `meet-the-press' programme organised by the Press Club here on Thursday, Mr. Karat accused the Indian Government of being soft and silent on the Israeli aggression in the Middle East.

Israel has arrogated to itself the right to attack any country with the blatant support of the United States. The Indian Government should demand immediate end to the aggression, he said.

The CPI(M) leader pointed out that the UPA Government's response to Israel's attack on Lebanon had been no different from the Vajpayee Government's soft stand on similar Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip. "Two soldiers are abducted and you destroy and entire country. This is unacceptable," he said.

The Left would demand a debate in Parliament on the Indo-US nuclear cooperation agreement and that India should not accept any stipulation that would harm its independent nuclear programme and sovereign rights over the technologies developed by it.
