BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Thursday adjourned till July 27 the hearing of bail petitions by two former officials of the Central Jail in Bangalore, P.N. Jayasimha and Nanjappa, who allegedly helped Abdul Kareem Telgi, prime accused in the stamp paper racket.

Both Jayasimha and Nanjappa had sought bail, saying that they were not involved in the racket and they were being "framed". They said they were arrested by the Stamp Investigation Team when it was investigating the case. Later, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took over the investigation.

The CBI, which opposed the bail petitions, said the polygraph and brain-mapping tests on the accused, conducted by the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), Bangalore, had indicated that they had not spoken the truth on their alleged involvement in the racket.

The CBI said the two persons were accused in the Madivala case and booked under sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Karnakata Stamp Act, 1957. It said Jayasimha and Nanjappa allegedly helped Telgi operate his racket when he was lodged in the Central Jail.

The CBI said others accused in the racket, such as Badruddin, Rafi Ahmed, Byroji Rao, Sadashiva, Abdul Wahid, Sadiq Ahmed Sheikh and M.B. Ali Illiyas, met Jayasimha and Nanjappa regularly.

On the bail petition by Jayasimha, the CBI said it was the "second round of petitions" by him seeking release on bail.

It alleged that Jayasimha helped Telgi host a party in jail when he was declared the successful bidder in an excise auction at Khanapur, Belgaum district.

Justice Ajit Gunjal adjourned hearing of the case.
