This Friday a group of old-timers will gather for a cup of coffee at their old college canteen 50 years after they parted ways to pursue their respective careers in their chosen fields. Also invited to the get-together by the former students are their old professors. Celebrating the golden jubilee of their association with Delhi University's Shri Ram College of Commerce are a few former students of the prestigious institution's 1956 batch who have decided to get together, remember and revisit their favourite haunts. "Though we haven't managed to get in touch and invite everyone in our batch for the meeting, we have about eight to ten former students who will meet in the college canteen on Friday morning. We then plan to spend the day together,'' said a retired senior government official, B. N. Makhija. Explaining how the idea came about and what the group hopes to achieve on Friday, he added: "The idea came about through the desire of the group to get together on the golden jubilee of the batch. After gathering at the school canteen for a cup of coffee, we will meet the college Principal and revisit our favourite haunts in the college including the place where we were ragged and also where we later ragged our juniors and exchange stories.'' Emphasising the need to have a more active old students' association, a member of the group said they would speak to the Principal and suggest that during get-togethers of old students special attention should be paid to those who are celebrating the silver or golden jubilee of their association with the good old college. -- Bindu Shajan Perappadan
