PLEADING FOR THE POOR: CPI and CPI (M) activists participating in a protest against price hike at Anantapur on Thursday.
ANANTAPUR: District leaders of the CPI and the CPI (M), at a joint dharna staged in front of the RDO's office here on Thursday, urged the State and Central Governments to take measures to bring the soaring prices of essential commodities under control. Speaking at the protest, the Left leaders said the poor were struggling to make ends meet due to the ever increasing prices of essential commodities. Their lives were burdened with price hike beyond limits, they said. They urged the State Government to supply all essential commodities including pulses, tamarind and onion, through fair price shops to ease the burden from the poor and middle class. The regular hike in the prices of petrol and diesel prices was having a telling impact on the prices of essential commodities, they said. They alleged that traders and middlemen were hoarding essential commodities to create an artificial scarcity to make easy money. M.V. Ramana, D. Hussain, Lingamaiah, and Narayanaswamy of CPI and K.A. Ratnaiach, T.N. Rasool, Krishnamurthy and Prasoona of CPI (M) spoke at the dharna.
