YSR releases book on Karimnagar

HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy released a book brought out to mark the centenary of the formation of Karimnagar district here on Thursday. Appreciating the effort in documenting history, culture and arts of the district, Dr. Reddy said the book would be useful for the present and future generations. D. Sridhar Babu, Government Whip, J. One killed, five hurt as hospital roof collapses

NANDYAL: One woman died and five others sustained injuries when the roof of the Government Hospital at Nandyal collapsed on Wednesday night. A patient, Kamalamma, who was undergoing treatment sustained injuries when the large pellets from the roof fell on her and other patients around midnight. The woman died after some time while others are undergoing treatment. - Staff Reporter

Sarpanch candidate `kidnapped'

ADILABAD: Sidam Laxmi, a Gond tribal contesting for the sarpanch post of Narsapur gram panchayat in Ichoda mandal, has been allegedly kidnapped according to a complaint lodged by her husband Gangaram. In his complaint, he accused U. Subhash, Jugnaka Yadav, M. Gangadhar and S. Bapu Rao of carrying out the kidnapping. The complaint also stated that Subhash's mother was one of the contestants for the post. -Staff reporter

Mala Mahanadu group gets recognition

HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh Mala Mahanadu, a breakaway group of the erstwhile organisation floated by P.V. Rao, has secured registration as Mala Mahanadu, its State president Karem Sivaji said. In a press release , he claimed that this proved that the organisation headed by him was the genuine group working for the cause of the community. - Special Correspondent

Eight hurt in clash

KADAPA: Eight persons were injured following clashes between two rival groups in Gangannapalle village in Pendlimarry mandal on Thursday. The clash was said to be a fallout of an altercation during filing of nominations on Wednesday. The injured were admitted to Kadapa Government Hospital. - Staff Reporter

Rights Court takes up Gangavaram case

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Human Rights Court here has taken cognizance of a complaint filed by a local advocate against the Commissioner of Police, some senior police officers, the RDO and other revenue officials in connection with the Gangavaram incident in which a fisherman was killed in police firing on March 27. The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate-cum-Judge of the Human Rights Court, Sardar Mohan Rao, in his orders issued on Wednesday, however, exempted Collector Anil Kumar Singhal, and one of the promoters of the Gangavaram Port Project, D.V.S. Raju, since no prima-facie case was made out against them. - Special Correspondent

Striking mill workers lathicharged

VIZIANAGARAM: The police used mild force to disperse striking jute mill workers and took 26 of them into custody, including IFTU district leaders -- M. Gopalam and A. Simhachalam -- at Bobbili on Thursday. According to the information received here, police used force when a large number of jute workers went in a rally and violated prohibitory orders in force on the factory premises. - Correspondent

Student run over by train

VIZIANAGARAM: K. Madhavi, a B.Ed student in a private educational institution here, was run over by a passenger train while she was crossing the railway track at V.T. Agraharam here on Thrusday morning. The student, a resident of Vijayawada, was staying in the working women's hostel and was going to the college when the mishap took place.

Naxal rehabilitated

KADAPA: A surrendered naxalite Ramanamma alias Radha of Mallur village in Chinnamandem mandal was presented a cheque for Rs. 15,000 by Kadapa Superintendent of Police Y. Nagi Reddy on Wednesday. Ramanamma was given the amount to enable her to open a kirana shop in Mallur village. .-Staff Reporter

Swearing-in on July 23

MACHILIPATNAM: L. Subbaiah Rayudu, Chief Executive Officer, Zilla Parishad, Krishna district, in a press release on Thursday said that swearing-in of Kukkala Nageswara Rao and Tateneni Padmavathi as zilla parishad Chairman and Vice-Chairperson respectively would be held on July 23.

Lorry driver killed

KAKINADA : T.Gopalakrishna (50) a driver who was asleep under his stationary lorry on the outskirts of Gandepalli was killed when another lorry dashed against the vehicle bringing him under the wheels, in the early hours of Thursday. - Correspondent
