CHENNAI: The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) on Thursday urged the State Government to set up a `Tamil Nadu Manufacturing Competitive Council'. They also asked for setting up of a panel comprising top Government officials and captains of the industry with a mandate to create "Brand Tamil Nadu", besides marketing the State's capabilities to potential investors. Chairman of the CII-Tamil Nadu Sanjay Jayavarthanavelu said in a statement here that the organisation in its pre-budget proposals to the Government had called for efforts to enhance infrastructure for creating manufacturing and satellite hubs, export cum service hubs and tourism corridors in the southern districts. He also urged the Government to create 25 new clusters for industries in textile and automobile sectors. The move would spur rapid industrial growth, he said. The CII, in its proposals, identified huge potential for Madurai to emerge as a manufacturing hub with Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram and Tirunelveli as satellite hubs. These infrastructure development projects would give major thrust to the growth of automobile, textiles, rubber, ITES-BPO and tourism sectors in the southern districts, Mr. Jayavarthanavelu said. The need for launching the Automotive Parks of India Scheme, creating an academy for construction and introducing selective reforms of labour laws and related legislation were among the proposals made by the CII-Tamil Nadu, he said.
