CHENNAI: The city police have recovered stolen property worth Rs. 8.86 lakh and arrested 12 people, Police Commissioner Letika Saran said here on Thursday. Speaking to reporters, she said the property recovered included 48 sovereigns of gold, two autorickshaws, seven two-wheelers as well as Rs. 40,000 in cash. The arrested included Murugan of Tiruvarur district, Christopher of Puliankulam and Manoharan from Palayamkottai in Tirunelveli district.
Denominations
Ms. Saran said a special team had seized a colour photocopying machine with which fake Indian currencies in the denomination of Rs. 1,000 and Rs. 500 among others were "printed" by a gang in Rajaji Nagar. The arrested included a doctor, Dhanapalakrishnan (58),of Rajaji Nagar, practising acupuncture medicine. The police seized rubber stamps and materials used to create watermarks in the currency notes. The gang was also involved in the printing of non-judicial stamp papers. The seized materials were valued at Rs. 3 lakh. On the complaint against actor Sarath Kumar, she said the issue pertained to 1996. The actor had executed a promissory note and claimed to have repaid the money taken. The matter had to be investigated further, she said.
Hoax calls
She said a few schools in the city received phone calls warning of bombs on their premises But they turned out to be hoax. Soon after receiving the information, thorough checks were conducted in the schools with the help of Bomb Detection and Disposal Squads. The identity of the caller was not known, but the matter was being investigated. On the increase in the number of young couples turning out at the Commissionerate seeking help from the police, she said in most of the cases the couples had entered into wedlock and sought protection. It should not be treated as if "we are encouraging" such marriages, she said.
